Kuraray Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masaaki Ito, “Kuraray”), PTT Global Chemical Public Company Ltd.(Head office: Bangkok, Thailand; President & CEO: Supattanapong Punmeechaow, “GC”) and Sumitomo Corporation(Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President & Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo, “Sumitomo”), on July 11, 2018, held an opening ceremony for a joint venture company, Kuraray GC Advanced Materials Co., Ltd. (“Kuraray GC Advanced Materials”) in Thailand.

The opening ceremony was attended by executives from the Kuraray Group, GC Group, and Sumitomo Group. It took place at the Energy Complex, Bangkok, in Thailand, on July 11, 2018.

At the ceremony, attendees expressed their high expectations for this project in Thailand. Kuraray’s President Ito remarked, “It is our pleasure to operate the company with GC which is a diversified and wide-range petrochemical businesses, including manufacturing and distribution of upstream, intermediate, and downstream petrochemical products and Sumitomo which is a Global Trading Company and has strong business ground in Thailand and Southeast Asia.” GC’s President Supattanapong commented, “It has been a very long journey to achieve this joint venture. Over the past three years, our three companies have been harmonizing together and put tremendous effort into making this project happen.” and Sumitomo’s Representative Director, Executive Vice President Fujita said, “We at Sumitomo Corporation intend to offer our full support, together with Kuraray and GC to ensure the success of this Joint Venture Company.”

With Hemaraj Eastern Industrial Estate (Map Ta Phut Complex), Rayong in Thailand, as the candidate of the production site, the Company-Kuraray GC Advanced Materials Co., Ltd.-is scheduled to manufacture and sell High Heat Resistant Polyamide-9T (PA9T) and Hydrogenated Styrenic Block Copolymers (HSBC).

They are colorless, transparent and almost entirely odorless, with low VOC’s. Kuraray’s liquid rubber grades function as reactive plasticizers but have far higher molecular weight than normal plasticizers. They are co-vulcanizable and reduce migration significantly which improves the product’s shelf life. Using Kuraray Liquid Rubber during compounding phase significantly reduces processing time and improves process ability, while maintaining the rubber compounds’ physical properties. This results in a product with lower processing costs in total.

The standards expected of the materials and their processing capability continue to rise. Plastics for Special Applications, from High-Damping to Totally Clear

Kurarity is a new series of acrylic-based block copolymers. With their outstanding clarity and elasticity, the materials are ideally suited to optical waveguide applications such as in vehicles, airplanes, and buildings. Produced with Kuraray’s unique anionic polymerization technology, the thermoplastic acrylic elastomer features a very low share of residual monomers and oligomers – and is thus extremely pure. Kurarity is high-gloss, weather-resistant, and compatible with many polar materials – and ideal for numerous applications such as adhesives and moldings or for the modification of plastics.

The highly elastic triblock copolymer Hybrar displays unique vibration-damping and shock-absorbing properties, and its production without plasticizers is environmentally sound. The material achieves its maximal loss factor close to room temperature and is thus suitable for noise reduction in the automotive sector, the electronics industry and for acoustic components. Hybrar molds readily and is resistant to heat and weather influences – ideal for sports articles and floorcoverings. In its hydrated state, the triblock copolymer can be mixed with polypropylene, for example, to achieve high transparency and clarity. Hybrar can be flexibly processed with a wide range of methods such as film and tube extrusion and injection molding.

The EVOH copolymer Eval can be employed as a barrier resin in coextrusion and coinjection processes. With its astonishing barrier performances, this thermoplastic can as well be used  for the packaging of dry food (coffee, tea) or retorted foodstuffs despite severe sterilization conditions allowing long shelf life preservation. At Fakuma, Kuraray explains how Eval EVOH as a highly effective barrier can also be used in complex coinjected structures.

Genestar PA9T is a high-performance polyamide that is available in extrusion and injection-molding grades. Its extremely balanced properties combine low water absorption, high chemical resistance, and exceptional mechanical properties into the high-temperature range. The polyamide is suitable for use in the automotive industry in transmissions, fuel lines, and thermostat housings. With its astonishing blister resistance, the material can also be used in the electrical and electronics industry such as in the production of SMT plug connectors. Based on the C9 module from Kuraray, Genestar is thus a dependable alternative to PA12 and other adiponitrile-based polyamides

The polyvinyl-alcohol-based polymer Mowiflex is water-soluble and at the same time highly suitable for thermoplastic processes such as injection molding and 3D printing. The material permits maximum design freedom in the production of plastics parts and can be used for such items as water-soluble packages, agrochemicals, and dishwasher detergent tablets. With its water-solubility, Mowiflex is also suitable for use in fusible-core injection molding and for carrier materials in 3D printing. With its certified biodegradation, Mowiflex biodegrades demonstrably in water and its disposal via the wastewater is both simply and environmentally friendly.

 

 

Absolutely clar for a stunning light effect: Thanks to their outstanding purity, the new Kurarity acrlyic-based block copolymers are highly flexible and transmit optical waves over long distances– ideal for waveguide applications in cars, vehicles, and buildings.

 

Facilitating a smooth ride, the triblock copolymer Hybrar from Kurary has exceptional damping properties toward noise, vibration, and shocks. With its high resistance to heat and weather influences, it is suitable for challenging applications in vehicles, sports equipment, and the electronics industry.

Kuraray Liquid Rubber for enhanced compounds

Liquid rubber derived from isoprene, butadiene, styrene and butadiene or the newly developed bio-based monomer farnesene are widely used as high molecular weight, co-vulcanizable plasticizers. In rubber manufacturing, improvements in processing and physical properties can be achieved. Liquid rubbers are produced and used corresponding to their "solid" counter types. Therefore advantages can be demonstrated beyond a pure plasticizing effect.

Kuraray Liquid Rubber in (racing-) Tires

In addition to its excellent performance in winter tires, Kuraray Liquid Rubber also achieves exceptional results in racing tires: K-LR makes it possible to produce tires with increased grip and longer service life. The use of Kuraray Liquid Rubber in (racing) tires also increases safety, as a shortened braking distance is possible, even on wet or winter roads, a stable steering behavior is maintained. Kuraray Liquid Rubber affects the Tan δ, which in turn leads to reduced rolling resistance and can thus reduce fuel consumption.

Beside the explanation of the technical background of various K-LR applications Kuraray will present its own racing kart and racing tires based on Kuraray Liquid Rubber.

Liquid Farnesene Rubber

As a new product, Kuraray introduces "Liquid Farnesene Rubber", which adds a bio-based monomer to the Kuraray Liquid Rubber portfolio. Developed in cooperation with the bioscience company Amyris, Liquid Farnesene Rubber (LFR) is currently used mainly in winter tires, where it increases ice grip at low temperatures while preventing the curing of rubber compounds over time, thereby maintaining the tire performance.

Broad Portfolio of Plastics for Everything from Automotive to Packaging

The hydrogenated styrene farnesene block copolymer (HSFC) Septon Bio is the new and bio-based TPE raw material from Kuraray. Thanks to its high flow ability and outstanding adhesion, it is extra-easy to process, does without plasticizers and, in addition, has a broader damping range than conventional hydrogenated styrene block copolymers (HSBC). Septon Bio is the outcome of collaboration with Amyris, which derives the basic material B-farnesene from sugarcane. Septon Bio is put to use in many different applications such as adhesives, sealants, compounds and coatings, and is used for polymer modification.

The highly elastic styrene block copolymer Hybrar absorbs shocks and vibrations – even without integrated plasticizer. Available in hydrogenated and non-hydrogenated grades, it features good moldability and robustness. This makes Hybrar suitable for sports equipment, automotive and acoustic components, and floorcoverings.

The EVOH copolymer Eval is used as a barrier resin in co-extrusion and co-injection processes. Employed in extremely thin layers just a few millimeters thick in food and medicine packages, it provides a functional barrier versus oxygen and thus extends product quality and shelf life. In addition, it allows plastic automotive fuel systems to comply with strict fuel vapour emission standards. At Fakuma, Kuraray will explain how Eval as a highly effective barrier can be used in complex co-injected structures – to make barrier applications previously not possible with coextrusion processing.

(Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masaaki Ito; "Kuraray") today announces Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. has adopted liquid farnesene rubber (LFR) as a performance enhancing additive for use in the production of the latest studless tire WINTER MAXX 02. LFR is a liquid rubber developed by Kuraray using a new biologically derived diene monomer called farnesene, developed by Amyris, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMRS). This is the first time it is being used in tires.
    Kuraray has discovered a variety of LFR’s unique advantages and, going forward, will continue optimizing its molecular design to develop new applications that meet customers’ diverse performance requirements, going beyond tires.

1. Background

  • We concluded a joint-development agreement with U.S. biotechnology company Amyris, Inc. in 2011, and together created technology that refines Amyris’s biomass material farnesene to a level of purity suitable for polymerization as well as technology that synthesizes LFR. We discovered relationships between various properties when combining LFR’s molecular structure with rubber compounds and began supplying LFR to tire manufacturers. And, recently, following the success of this partnership, in December 2016, Kuraray and Amyris signed a multi-year collaboration extension, which includes joint marketing of products to industry and end customers.
  • We specially designed the LFR used in the Sumitomo Rubber’s latest studless tire WINTER MAXX 02. By combining the LFR with rubber compounds, we have improved the tire’s ice grip performance at low temperatures while impeding the hardening of rubber compounds over time, thereby helping maintain the tire’s performance.

2. LFR Features

  • This proprietary liquid rubber uses farnesene manufactured from sugar cane using fermentation technology.
  • The viscosity is much lower compared with current liquid isoprene rubber. When used as an additive in rubber compounds, it imparts high plasticity. In addition, it maintains excellent flexibility even at low temperatures and improves ice grip performance.

  • Thanks to its optimal molecular weight, LFR reacts completely with solid rubber during vulcanization, meaning, unlike an oil, which would migrate to the rubber’s surface over time and thus impede hardening, it stays bonded. Therefore, its ice grip performance is maintained over the long term.

 

LFR possesses a highly branched brush-like structure with molecular chains that do not easily become entangled with one another. In addition, a highly reactive double bond on the end of each branch ensures that, when vulcanized, LFR completely reacts with solid rubber and solidifies

The products highlighted offer a wide range of performance, design and production benefits for the automotive industry.

A distribution agreement between the Business Unit Elastomer of Kuraray Europe GmbH, Hattersheim, and Marubeni Europe plc, Dusseldorf, was terminated on June 30, 2016.

This was also notable at the Kuraray booth. Beside many existing customers who came to visit also an increasing number of potential customers wanted to know more about our products. The focus was Kuraray’s Liquid Rubber portfolio which is getting more important for many tire producers. It was also a good opportunity to present our new Liquid Rubber brochure and the new tire illustration which shows the advantages of using Kuraray Liquid Rubber in tires at a glance. Besides that our colleague Marcel Gründken held a presentation “Engineered Tires with Liquid Rubber” on the exhibition conference which raised the interest of many visitors.

In summary our global team was very satisfied with the results of the exhibition and also the moving to Hannover.

Ltd. has developed and marketed the SEPTON™ V Series, the SEPTON™ Q Series and the SEPTON™ K Series within its SEPTON™ and HYBRAR™ families of high-performance, highly functional thermoplastic elastomer products. Now the Company has developed the SEPTON™ J Series, a new thermoplastic elastomer with superior compression set, excellent buffering and vibration dampening capabilities, and superb polymer processing that is particularly suitable for the design of extremely soft gel materials. Like a number of other plastic products, SEPTON™ and HYBRAR™ hydrogenated styrenic thermoplastic elastomers can be easily molded. Moreover, they are characterized by rubber-like elasticity and are widely replacing vulcanized rubber as a soft molding material. It retains superb mechanical performance, including low density , good compression set, high-strength and tear resistance, and the low-temperature performance of existing SEPTON™ products. In addition, SEPTON™ J Series possesses better shock absorption and vibration dampening performance than conventional low-hardness compounds. Because of these unique properties—as a soft, low-hardness gel and as a material that achieves distinctive and superior performance—applications for the SEPTON™ J Series are expected to expand into such high-value-added high-performance applications as medical and nursing care products, personal comfort goods, sporting goods, industrial components, and electrical and electronic components.

In order to gain a direct understanding of markets needs, Kuraray conducted limited marketing to key customers and end-users in Japan, the United States, Europe and Asia to establish benefits in potential new applications. While maintaining closer customer contact, Kuraray will roll out SEPTON™ J Series products and applications, and develop the material as a new core product series in pursuit of higher performance, higher functionality, and product differentiation, and thereby leading to elastomer business expansion.

The New Elastomer, which has been developed utilizing Kuraray’s proprietary technology, possesses transparency and softness, as well as adhesive properties. These characteristics are utilized in the optical and molding material fields, which are demonstrating great potential for market growth.

As it undertakes full-scale development, Kuraray is targeting a business scale for the New Elastomer of ¥10 billion in sales in 2018.
