A mistura dos dois mon\u00f4meros \u00e9 polimerizada em solu\u00e7\u00e3o (S-SBR) ou como uma emuls\u00e3o (E-SBR), sendo que o \u00faltimo processo de fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o ainda \u00e9 o mais utilizado at\u00e9 hoje. As propriedades do pol\u00edmero dependem da propor\u00e7\u00e3o dos dois mon\u00f4meros. Por exemplo, um alto teor de estireno resulta em borrachas mais duras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O SBR \u00e9 caracterizado por um pre\u00e7o relativamente baixo, boas propriedades de desgaste e ades\u00e3o, e boa resist\u00eancia ao envelhecimento (com a ajuda de aditivos). Cerca de metade de todos os pneus de carro s\u00e3o produzidos com v\u00e1rios tipos de SBR. Outras aplica\u00e7\u00f5es incluem embreagens de acionamento, solas de sapato, correias transportadoras, adesivos e v\u00e1rias outras pe\u00e7as de borracha moldada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entretanto, n\u00e3o se deve confundir o SBR com o TPS, copol\u00edmero em bloco de estireno-butadieno-estireno. Este tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 obtido a partir dos mesmos mon\u00f4meros, mas: No copol\u00edmero em bloco de estireno-butadieno-estireno, cada mon\u00f4mero de estireno e butadieno forma um bloco e esses s\u00e3o combinados entre si. Enquanto um copol\u00edmero consiste nos dois mon\u00f4meros etileno e propileno, um terceiro mon\u00f4mero \u00e9 adicionado em um terpol\u00edmero com dieno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As duas borrachas de etileno-propileno, EPM (EPR) e EPDM, s\u00e3o um copol\u00edmero EP e um terpol\u00edmero EP, respectivamente. O EPM e o EPDM diferem muito pouco em termos de desempenho. Diferen\u00e7as significativas de desempenho existem apenas em aplica\u00e7\u00f5es extremamente exigentes, como no caso do \u00e1cido ac\u00e9tico concentrado. Nesses casos, alguns compostos de EPDM oferecem melhor desempenho do que a maioria dos EPMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para produzir um material de borracha el\u00e1stica, essencialmente as cadeias de pol\u00edmero precisam ser unidas por vulcaniza\u00e7\u00e3o. Devido \u00e0s propriedades qu\u00edmicas dessas cadeias, o processo de cura do EPM s\u00f3 pode ser \u00e0 base de per\u00f3xido. Isso \u00e9 diferente no EPDM, onde o mon\u00f4mero de dieno adicional fornece um local de vulcaniza\u00e7\u00e3o que permite que o pol\u00edmero seja vulcanizado com base em per\u00f3xido ou enxofre.
